DNZL - Deutsches Zentrum für nachhaltige Länderentwicklung
The emergence of the DZNL – a center for Germany’s future.
Why the DZNL was created
Germany faces profound structural challenges: local authorities are struggling with staff shortages, slow processes, funding shortfalls, complex funding structures, and growing expectations. At the same time, pressure is increasing due to climate targets, digitalization, infrastructure needs, and economic changes.
In this situation, the need arose for a central, neutral body that can systematically address municipal needs, close research gaps, develop standard recommendations, enable funding, and support implementation with quality assurance.
It was out of this necessity that the German Center for Sustainable State Development (DZNL) was founded – a national future project with the clear mandate to significantly accelerate modernization.
The DZNL was established to accelerate Germany’s modernization, strengthen municipal development, and provide sustainable solutions scientifically, neutrally, and on a scalable basis.
